Happy Accident Hutch

Many things about this hutch were what I would call Happy Accidents. I had a few troubles along the way, but the final result is gorgeous and looks pretty great sitting here in my breakfast nook. I found this hutch on Craigslist from a nice lady who was moving to Florida and couldn't take it with her. It was a LONG drive to get it, but definitely worth it.
When we got it home, we realized it had a pretty strong odor. Not gross, it was like she had kept herbs and spices loose in the drawers.  Hubs decided to put cedar chips in it for a couple of weeks. It helped quite a bit!  I could have used some Kilz on it and would have if the smell had been terrible, but I didn't think it was necessary.

I do love how pretty natural pine is and did contemplate stripping and re-staining it. Originally, I had planned to strip it, stain it gray and then do the aqua wash over the entire thing.   Even though I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted until I was done with it, I knew natural wood just wasn't what I wanted in my nook.

HINT: Do not use Green Frog Tape on freshly painted wood. There is now a "delicate" version of Frog Tape - it is yellow. Otherwise you might end up tearing your hair out along with taking the paint off of the wood. Oops & Grrrr

Sometimes you can use cat litter to soak out odors & stains - depends on how bad it is. It works on that "musty smell", which you might come across when redoing the old furniture. So also have to decide if you want to clean up the cat litter, too!

Love your color selection, especially with the knobs.

That is a great tip, April! Thanks a ton - I'd never heard that, but it makes sense! Happy you like it!

Are those red hinges? If so, I like them with the blue wash very much!

It's actually hammered copper, Sylvia. It's funny you say that, though, because the accent colors in my nook and dining room are this aqua blue and red. :-)

Very nice! I love the light blue on the inside. I got rid of a hutch about 3 years ago and this makes me wish I still had it to redo. But I have no where to put it.

Hello,
I love what you did with this hutch!!! I love that you can still see the wood grain & I love the color choices. I am still learning all these cool techniques. You said you painted the hutch white then washed (?) it with the aqua. Would you mind telling me how you did that?

Hi Michelle- If you send me an email, [email protected] , I would be happy to explain the wash technique I do. It's just kind of long to post in the comments section. Hmmm, maybe I should do a wash tutorial....

HI Kathy - Keep your eye on Craigslist and the thrift shops. Shallow hutches like this don't pop up often, but I do see them on CL, so maybe you can find one in your area! Good Luck!

I really like the blue wash technique and would like to know how to accomplish that. I am repainting the savaged furniture in my daughter's room and that look would be perfect for a beach-loving girl!
