Kitchen Reno Begins - Week 1

4/26/2015

Hi Friends! I'm sorry I missed you last week, I was on a little mini vacation on the Washington coast. We went clam digging in Moclips.  It was a really nice 3 day weekend. Felt good to get out of town for a little bit.
I was debating if I wanted to wait to post about our kitchen project until everything was done, but I thought it might be fun to take you guys along for the ride! Our kitchen needs a face lift. I love our home, but we really lack natural light. My goal with this reno is to lighten it up in there and to give it a brighter, airier feel.  So, here is a before pic.

As you can see from the photo at the top of this post, we have started taking out the tile counter tops and back splash.  If you've read some of my past posts, you will know that we have had some issues with the tiling job in our house. Some tiles have just fallen off and broken. Every time I clean the counter, more grout comes out. After 9 years of being here, well, there's not much grout left.

If you watch any of the DIY shows, when demo day comes around, you'll see homeowners swinging that sledgehammer around like a bunch of crazy people. Although, it does look fun, we had to stay sane.  We are keeping our cabinetry because it is pretty great as is.  This means taking the counters out had to be done in a precise and safe way.  We were still able to pull out the Big hammer! This hammer was my dads. I like having it around.
Taking the granite tiles off wasn't too difficult. However, they must have used some kind of futuristic super glue on the back splash tiles, because they did NOT want to come off. Hammers, pry bars and chisels were our only hope for this job. We created some pretty major holes in our wall. You could even see the insulation in couple areas!
Picture
Ummm.... Yeah, I am pretty sure this is NOT supposed to look this way.

Look! We made some angel wings!
Everything is ready now for the counter team to come in and do the template. I can't wait to check in next week and show your our progress!

Wow you truly did have a hard time getting those tiles out. I'm pretty sure it should be easier then that.

I agree Stella! It is insane. On one hand they are falling off and hitting the floor, then when we want to take them off, they aren't going anywhere. It was quite the challenge!

Your wall cabinets are awesome!
I understand you are changing the colors? I am sure it will turn great and will be around to check out your reveal.
(Meanwhile, sorry to do the faux pas but I really love your wall cabinets =D ).

Thank you, haha! I really love our cabinets too. We are going to paint them, though. Then I will REALLY live them!

Thank you, Karen! I am excited to have it lighter and brighter, for sure! I know it's a nice kitchen. I do love our cupboards, I just think I'll love them that much more once they aren't so dark! :-)

We are renovating too so I can't wait to follow your renovation adventures (although we're cheating and having someone do the work for us...the whole house needed to be done and we just don't have the time). Good luck with it all!

How exciting! I was there 2 years ago. It is a lot of work but oh so worth it in the end. We got lucky and most of our tile backsplash just popped right off. I can't say the next home owners will be as lucky if they do not like what we put up!;) Thank you for joining THT. I look forward to following along with your make over.

Thank you for stopping by Pamela! I will look through your archives - I love seeing people's home makeovers! I am glad to hear you didn't have as many problems with your backsplash as we did! :-)
