Is it possible to love a piece of furniture? Some may say it's crazy, but I say absolutely! My initial instincts when Hubs found this card catalog was to paint it red. Then that naggy lady who resides my my brain said, "No, that's too crazy!" However, my heart said to throw caution to the wind and go for it.  The heart wants what the heart wants, right? Thankfully, that's the route I went because I LOVE how it turned out. The ASCP in Emperor Red was the ticket I needed to turn this tired ol' brokedown piece o' junk into a fun, hip and beautiful conversation piece.   After I painted the first coat I let it dry and when I went back out to my workspace. I would have sworn I had a brand new Craftsman toolbox sitting there! I love Craftsman tools, but that was not the look I was going for. A second coat of paint and the dark wax gave me a beautiful finish.
Something I learned on this project was not to leave used wax rags on your newly waxed finish. It will take the finish right off. I didn't know that and now I do. I suppose this is also good info if you want to remove a boo boo you made with the dark wax.
A lot of elbow grease went in to this project. If you are interested, click on Read More below and you can see some more photos and a little more description about how I took this from a bit of a beast to a beauty.

As you can see, she wasn't in the greatest of shape. She was missing her sides, so we gave her some new ones!

She was dirty, sticky, scratched up and rough around the edges, so she needed a bath, patching and sanding.

Craftsman Toolbox? Nope!
The silver rods that were used to put the cards on were in pretty great shape, but I wanted them to be copper, so we removed them and Hubs devised a pretty great holding implement (simply put, we stabbed some cardboard) and spray painted them with a hammered copper spray paint by Rustoleum.

When we purchased the catalog it was missing some handles and had one missing box.  I decided to remove the bottom row and am now on the search for baskets to fit in those bottom holes. If I'm not successful on that search, I am going to mod podge some homemade boxes to fit.

I love your card catalogue. I passed up one several years ago and I could kick myself.

I don't think you're alone, Carol. I've heard this same statement from a number of people.

What a fabulous piece! You were right to choose the red. It really called for this. I am certain you heard it speaking, "Color me Emperor's Silk, Kris"! I pinned it!!!

I love this, & red was the perfect color! I saw one a few years ago that was too pricey & I've regretted not buying it ever since!

Thank you for stopping by Jennifer! We picked this catalog up for $35! Quite a steal I thought :-) It needed a lot of work, I think that's why it was so cheap.

Thanks Jen! I am glad you stopped in for a look. I was thinking about selling it, but everyone keeps telling me they can't find them. I think it might just have to stay in my craft room!
