The Big Kitchen Reveal!

Happy day, my friends! It's time for the kitchen reveal - yaaaayyyy!! If you've been on this journey with me, you know it's been a while. Of course, most renovations take at least twice as long as you expect them to and this one was no different. However, the wait was worth it. We LOVE how it's turned out. It is so much brighter and airier now. It really feels like a completely different kitchen, even though the footprint didn't change at all.  When I look at the before pictures now, I can' hardly remember it being like this. In case you are new to the blog or would like a refresher, here is a photo of how it looked before we started.
Picture
Not a bad kitchen, by any stretch of the imagination, just a very dark one that really  wasn't my style at all. So grab your cup of coffee or tea (or margarita if you're so inclined) and enjoy the picture show! As I go through the post, I will put in information on vendors, contractors, paint color, etc. I have not been paid in any way, so no bias here!

We opted to tile the wall from floor to ceiling. LOVE it! The tile is a honed marble subway tile. I found a great deal through The Builder Depot. I did a lot of research. I mean, to the point that I was annoying the heck out of hubs, ha! He pretty much told me to do what I thought was best (uh, ok, right on,  if you insist, haha)!  They had the best looking product for the best price, even including shipping from Georgia to Oregon. It was a little scary ordering without seeing it, but they do have free samples, so that's a good route to go before placing the big order.

If you look at the pictures above and below, you can see there is a good mixture of color, from bright white to soft gray and a few beigeish tones. My tile guy, Rick from Square 1 Tile, did a really good job mixing the colors up, so there weren't big areas of blocked color.   He also did an amazing job on the window wrap. It took him longer than he anticipated to do this, but he did really great work and I am really happy with the results.  If you are in the Portland/Salem area and looking for a tile guy, message me and I'd be happy to forward on Rick's contact to you.
Picture
Love how well the window wrap turned out!!

Oh look, there's the resident photo hound, errr, feline, I mean. "Baby, get out of my shot!" was said quite a bit today!

I really enjoy having fresh flowers in the house. I'm not the best at arranging them, but they still look pretty!

Dark, dreary...

Bright and Happy!!

The sink. What can I say. Well, honestly, I love the way it looks, but am not super happy with the function. I'm not sure if it's the faucet I picked out or the sink being undermount, but I am constantly cleaning up water that has splashed up on to the counter. We have very hard water here, so it's a constant battle and it's just a little frustrating that we can't seem to keep the water in the sink where it belongs. I am contemplating a different type of faucet, thinking that might help cut down on the splash. I'll let you know down the road where that goes.   She sure does look beautiful, though, right!?!
Picture
We have lived with the counters for a couple of months now and they are awesome! For the first couple of weeks I was really paranoid about staining them, which I guess was kind of silly. I really did do my homework and I knew this was the right product for us. Hubs is pretty hard on a kitchen, so we knew we needed something very durable.  We've spilled pomegranate juice, tomato sauce, oil and who knows what else and have had no problems cleaning them up. If you are interested in specific information on this product, please check out my week 4 renovation post.  We worked with David Foster at NW Cabinet Source. They have quite a few samples and different products to check out.
Picture
You can see from the before and after photos that we had work done on the peninsula to make it stand out more. Before it was just there, no interest to it. If you are interested in having some woodwork done by a pro, please let me know and I can get you in contact with Samuel of Restoration Counselling (he is a woodworker AND a counselor, not a bad combination for people going through a renovation, haha). For more specifics on the peninsula please check out my week 5 reno post.

The paint color for the bottom cabs is Sherwin Williams Tidewater.  The uppers is a Benjamin Moore color called Cloud White.  We contracted this job out to a very dear friend of my mom's. Her name is Linda and she is a spitfire!! Extremely likable, very funny and a very skilled painter. I would love to be able to say it was all me, but I knew there was no way I could handle that job on top of everything else.  She did a great job and I am very happy I didn't have to deal with it myself, ha!
Picture
We had the interior of the glass door cabinets painted in the Tidewater color. I haven't finished loading them up with my pretties yet, but I'm thinking about painting it white instead. I have a lot of pretty blue glass and I think it would look better against a white backdrop. I do love those contrasting colors, though! Decisions, decisions...
Picture
I picked up these bistro chairs at World Market. I think they match perfectly! I love the natural wood color against the stone and the painted wood.
Picture

I have jumped on the bandwagon! I really love succulents and seedums. I tend to not do too well with houseplants, but these are pretty forgiving and they are so interesting to look at! There is a large variety to choose from and they are super easy to propagate.!

Picture
Picture
I picked up these pretty ice tongs in Provence last year and the rolling pin last weekend at the Portland Antique and Collectibles Fair.
I hope you enjoyed the kitchen tour. I know it's been a long time comin'! Thank you, as always, for stopping by and keeping up with me. To those of you who have been checking in to make sure I didn't fall off the face of the planet, thank you, so much appreciated! You know who you are!! :-)

OH MY GOODNESSSSS!

Gorgeous!
Sooo worth waiting for you to post this. :D

It's gorgeous, it looks fantastic, so much light, such super tile (and I bookmarked the source tip - thanks!) and glass doors, even the tall chairs are the perfect color!

I don't know if keeping the faucet lower helps a bit with the splashing?

Really nice kitchen, you did it! And congrats to your tiler, excellent work.

In regards to the sink, that's what I'm thinking. A different faucet with a lower neck may be what we end up doing.

Beautiful kitchen! When we first had our gooseneck faucet, I too, had water everywhere. I figured out just because the faucet was so much higher than the sink I was (out of habit) washing my hands, etc. right under the faucet. When I started doing everything lower in the sink I cut way down on the water splashing everywhere. Maybe that will help!

Hi Becky - thank you for your input. It's really funny that you said that because I have really been trying to wash my hands and other things lower in the sink to avoid the tsunami of water, haha! Thank you for the thoughts on that, it's greatly appreciated!

I'm so glad I found this! We have a 'great' kitchen. It's only a few years old and in perfect shape, BUT the cabinets are just a bit darker than I'd like. The granite is dark, and the floor is a beige tile. I want to paint the cabinets white so bad, but I feel guilty because the kitchen really is a nice kitchen. You've kind of given me inspiration to just create the kitchen that we will enjoy most! Thanks for sharing such great pictures!

Thank you Kelli! I am so with you, I was actually really scared to paint the cabinets. My painter even half way tried to talk me out of it! I am so happy I went with it though. It was worth a few angst ridden days!

Your kitchen turned out just beautifully. You won't be sorry that you put in quartz counters. We have had ours for about 2 years, the exact pattern that you have, and I could not be happier. I, too, loved the marble and wanted it so badly but didn't want to put up with the downside, which I know a lot do not agree with and will have marble no matter what, but you will find that you have the look but none of the headaches..Happy Weekend..Judy

I love it!!! It looks so great. Our home is done in white, grey and black with pops of color all over and a cobalt blue wall running through the kitchen and the dining room. Your kitchen would fit in perfectly! I painted the cabinets black as everything else is light, but I am rethinking the top cabinets, I think I want them white. We are planning on putting glass in most of the top cabinet doors. I would love to have your counters. Gorgeous. The whole room is! Great job.

Just found my way over here from another blog and love your new kitchen! So fresh and pretty without being too girly either. Such a nice change too in the color scheme from the usual way. Also, love that you hired out the painting as it makes me think I could do something similar--but only if I hired it out. :) One question I had though-- how can you stand an animal, pet not withstanding, being on the counters where food will be? Thanks again for all the pics and info!

Hi Karen - thank you for taking the time to comment, I am happy you like the renovation! We are really happy with it. I think you might have been talking to my mom about the cat on the counter, haha! Soap and hot water works for us, but I suspect that only animal people will understand why Baby on the counter doesn't bother us. Have a great day!

Hi Laura - it was their Venato Carrara Honed Marble. I did a lot of research and this product is really beautiful. I would highly recommend it. I know ordering something like this from far away is a bit scary, but it arrived in perfect condition. My only recommendation is to order at least 20% overage. We used every single piece of our extra 20%. If you end up doing it, be sure to send me pics of your project when you're done!! :-)
